Evacuation zones expanded after chemical tank explosion in Toledo, Ohio

Emily Downey, who lives just two-and-a-half miles from the Toledo chemical leak, describes the moments that she and her family needed to leave their home.

A 5,500 gallon tank spewed glycidyl methacrylate – used to make certain plastics, paints and coatings perform better. About 60 people have been treated for symptoms.

Officials say the release occurred during a transfer operation and was not caused by an explosion.

Nearly 1,000 Toledo residents were ordered to evacuate after a chemical tank explosion sparked fears of toxic fumes and further blasts.
