For the first time in a century, a new species of cat has been discovered. Smaller than a house cat with leopardlike spots, the tilcayo is the first brand-new feline species added to the cat family tree since the pampas cat was described in 1923.

The wild cat is the size of a domestic kitten. Despite its elusive nature, there are three major threats to its existence.

Researchers have identified a previously unknown tiger cat species living in Bolivia’s cloud forests, naming it Leopardus tilcayo. The roughly 3-pound feline is the first living cat species formally named and described in more than a century, researchers said.
